Technology of OPS™ Server Standard
VKernel is a VMware Alliance partner and integrates with vCenter through the API. Integration points include:
In addition, vOPS Server Standard can federate multiple vCenter instances.
Data Collection
VKernel vOPS Server Standard features significant integration into VMware vCenter. VKernel draws data on 20 key VMware performance metrics through the vCenter API and processes this information through a patent-pending Capacity Analytics Engine™. The results from this intense analysis provide the precise measurements, recommendations and alerts that power VKernel's applications and makes VMware performance management and capacity management fast, easy and accurate.
Importantly, VKernel balances real-time monitoring with maintaining network performance by passively scanning for vCenter alerts every 2 minutes with a minimal network impact (a data download occurs if a vCenter alarm is detected). Full data sets from vCenter are downloaded every 30 minutes to provide vOPS Server Standard the necessary metrics data without overloading the network.
Automated Implementation of vOPS' Recomendations
Automated remediation originating from the VKernel vOPS Server Standard is available in the performance monitoring and optimization features. Within vOPS Server Standard, a remediation to resolve root cause issues involving CPU or memory allocation changes can be enacted with the click of a button, and rightsizing recommendations for optimal CPU and memory allocations can be automated on an ad hoc or scheduled basis. Additionally, abandoned VMDK files can be deleted and snapshots auto-merged. These recommendations produced by the Capacity Analytics Engine are transmitted through the vCenter API and are then executed by vCenter.
Folder Synchronization
VKernel vOPS Server Standard will synchronize with vCenter's folder structure and reflect all changes made to the infrastructure navigation tree.
U/I Integration
VKernel vOPS Server Standard can be launched from within vCenter providing a smooth, seamless user experience when investigating and preventing issues, planning for capacity, reporting, and optimizing the virtual environment. Thus, a system administrator can gain immediate insight into the health and status of any virtual object that is actively selected during a vCenter session.
vCenter Federation
VKernel vOPS Server Standard can federate multiple vCenter instances to report on and work through VMware monitoring and capacity management tasks for the entire virtual infrastructure.
vCenter Alert Integration
Alerts from vCenter integrate into VKernel vOPS Server Standard and display with added analysis within the vOPS performance monitoring features.
vCenter Alert Optimization
Six critical capacity related vCenter alerts can be set with best practice settings by the VKernel vOPS Server Standard to power its VMware monitoring capabilities.
