vOPS API Overview Video

Capacity Management Data Integration

vOPS API Provides Capacity Intelligence To External Systems

Data centers often use external systems to assist in various virtual machine provisioning, maintenance and other VM life cycle workflows. Several of these operations require performance and capacity management information in order to complete tasks or enable workflow automation. Access to all VKernel data is available for external systems via web services through the REST-based vOPS API. Additionally, virtualization management operations within vOPS Server Standard can be automated through the API. The vOPS API is available within vOPS Server Standard and additional support for customers and partners wishing to use the API is available through the Capacity.LINK program.

Capacity Data Integration
USE CASES

Integration of VKernel performance or capacity management data is critical for operations in a number of external systems. Listed below are a number of use cases requiring this information listed by external system:

BILLING SYSTEMS

  • Billable Amount Integration – The billable amounts for resource allocations or resource usage for a customer from vOPS Server Standard's reporting and chargeback features can be inserted into third party billing systems
  • Automated Chargeback Setup – Customer’s VMs can be automatically organized and configured for chargeback within vOPS Server Standard upon virtual machine deployment

ISSUE TICKETING SYSTEMS

  • VM Status and Performance Data Integration – Performance issue diagnosis, issue impact analysis and issue remediation steps from vOPS' performance monitoring features can be pulled into issue ticket

SELF-SERVICE PROVISIONING PORTALS

  • VM Slot Inventory Analysis – VKernel’s VM slot calculation results, available in vOPS' capacity planning capabilities, can be accessed to determine whether additional VMs of a certain type can fit into existing infrastructure
  • Automated VM Slot Capacity Reservations – Resources for VMs that are pending deployment can be “reserved” through a third-party system in vOPS' capacity planning features to remove those known additions from further modeling consideration

ORCHESTRATION ENGINES

  • VM Addition Feasibility – VKernel’s VM slot calculations, one of vOPS' capacity planning capabilities, can determine whether a VM will fit without causing performance issues
  • VM Best Placement Recommendation – VKernel’s VM slot calculations can also be used to determine which hardware within the virtualized infrastructure has the most open availability for a particular kind of VM

SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT CONSOLES

  • Capacity Management Data Integration – Any information can be extracted from VKernel and reformatted into a screen in a systems management console

REPORTING FRAMEWORKS

  • Full VKernel Data Extraction – All VKernel data can be programmatically extracted for further formatting, distribution, organization or additional analysis within a reporting application
