Capacity vScope

vOPS Capacity vScope allows VM administrators to visually assess all hosts in an environment for capacity issues and predicted performance problems across multiple data center sites and several hypervisors. Mousing over a host will provide quick information into what issue that virtual object is facing. Double-clicking on any affected host brings the user to a drill-down report that will show additional detail.

Future Bottlenecks Report

The Future Bottlenecks Report will show VMs and hosts that are forecast to experience resource constraints if an environment does not change in its current configuration. This predication is gathered from mathematical extrapolation of the Capacity Analytics Engine. The report will show all virtual objects that face capacity bottlenecks with a time frame of when the problem will occur, and an identification of the resource constraint.

Future Requirements Report

The Future Requirements Report forecasts up to 180 days into the future, based on environment growth, exactly how much physical CPU, memory and storage will be needed to support the expansion of the environment.

Capacity Availability Map

The Capacity Availability Map will list all hosts, clusters and resource pools, and note precisely how many VM slots are safely available in each for one or multiple different VMs. These calculations by the Capacity Analytics Engine take into account CPU, memory, storage, disk throughput, storage clusters (in vSphere 5) and HA settings and allows for modeling of specific datastore storage space and disk throughput capacity. The sizing of VM slots to model can be based on allocations for existing VMs, average or maximum VM sizes, or customized VM load signatures. Capacity availability results can also be forecasted up to 30 days in the future with mathematical extrapolation of the Capacity Analytics Engine. Importantly, the capacity for any reserved VMs can be removed from modeling consideration.

Reserved VM Slots

The capacity for VM slots needed for future deployments can be reserved to remove it from further capacity modeling consideration. Models for multiple VMs identified in the Capacity Availability Map can be converted into reserved VM slots. Alerts are available for when capacity needed to maintain the reservations is taken up by additional deployments. Also, reconciliation abilities exist to match a reservation to a deployed VM in order to maintain the accuracy of the available capacity that can be modeled.

Predictive Alerts

Predictive Alerts are available in Capacity Manager to help warn of impending problems. These alerts can be sent to identify when abnormal trends in VM performance metrics such as increases in Memory Swapped or CPU Ready Usage are forecast to occur based on the Capacity Analytics Engine's mathematical extrapolation of the environment's growth and usage patterns. Predictive Alerts are set on certain time frames, such as sending a warning when a condition is forecast two weeks in advance. Alerts can be set for datastores or at the data center, resource pool, cluster, host or VM level and are sent via email or will appear on the Predictive Alerts screen. Additionally, alerts are available to be sent to Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM).

Resource Graphs

Resource Graphs provide the ability to visualize growth trends in an environment for a variety of VM performance metrics such as IOPS or CPU Utilization. Metrics can be graphed to view data in absolute or relative terms. Multiple resource areas can be graphed together over a time period, or a particular metric can be graphed to compare against trends in two different time frames.
