Capacity Management Defined
Capacity management is the mapping of CPU, memory and storage resources to the performance requirements of an individual VM with the goal of meeting performance objectives at the lowest possible cost.
Capacity management must be accomplished:
- Across the host, cluster, resource pool and data center level
- In real time, but taking into account both past and future resource and performance requirements
- In spite of the dynamic nature of VMs as they are started, stopped, moved, redeployed
- Taking into account the impact of the interaction between VMs
- Observing more than simple utilization metrics
Capacity Management Requires Capacity Analytics
For very small environments, capacity management can be accomplished using spreadsheets and white boards or even closely watching real time performance monitoring tools. At low numbers of VMs, your eyeballs are doing the capacity planning. But at some point, as the environment size grows beyond 4 sockets, the complexities involved move beyond the spreadsheet realm and the ability of the human eye to watch real time monitoring graphs. At this point, the use of capacity analytics is required.
Capacity Analytics Requirements
To accomplish capacity analytics requires:
- Modeling and Profiling - Capacity analytics starts with a robust model of the underlying infrastructure combined with detailed profiling of each VMs consumption and performance characteristics. The model must take into account the dynamic nature of a virtualized environment as VMs move and shift throughout the host environment.
- Analytics Engine - An advanced analytics engine then performs sophisticated multi-dimensional analysis using both the infrastructure model and the VM profile information. As virtualized environments are dynamic, this analysis needs to be performed in near real time as opposed to a monthly or quarterly cadence.
- Actionable Results - The output of the analytics engine must be actionable for a system administrator and must provide root cause analysis for validation.
All of the above must be accomplished while also being:
- Scalable from 50 to 5,000 VMs
- Turnkey to install and use so the system provides an immediate ROI
- Easy to use to insure continued usage and to support the immediate ROI
