VMware announced that vSphere will essentially be sold based on the amount of virtual RAM assigned all the VMs in a vCenter-managed cluster. VMware has shifted from a physical CPU based model to a virtual RAM model. Economically, increasing core densities by Intel and AMD drove this move to recoup more of the value that vSphere provides from customers deploying on high core count or high memory density machines. This pricing change will impact how customers purchase equipment and operate their virtual environments.
